The Tree Constraints Plan and Root Protection Areas
Following on from the initial tree survey BS 5837 defines the requirement
for a Tree Constraints Plan including detail of the Root Protection Areas for each tree. The Root Protection area
is calculated on the measured diameter of the tree and can be adjusted to take account of the effect of the
physical features of the site close to the tree.
The Root Protection Area is plotted accurately on to the base drawing and
represents the minimum area to be left undisturbed around each tree. It will form the basis of a Construction
Exclusion Area in later work.
The Tree Constraints plan is a design tool which describes and plots the
underground constraints as defined above and the above ground constraints such as tree height and crown
spread.
In the interests of accuracy we measure the crown spread of each tree on
each of the four cardinal compass points, North, South, East and West.
The current and the ultimate height of the trees is important in terms of
shading of new buildings and possible interference with the fabric of those buildings in times of high
winds.
The Tree Constraints Plan informs the initial layout of the site and
obviously should be available to the site designers before the final layout is fixed.
