Tree Surveys
We will collect the standard data as specified in BS 5837 Trees in
Relation to Construction (Recommendations) by means of a site visit and the use of our GPS enabled hand held
computers, running FastMap Mobile and FastMap Office software, and LaserAce tree and distance measuring
devices. For more information on these please click here
Generally the following arboricultural information is recorded and stored
for the preparation of other elements within BS 5837.
- Tree reference number (to be recorded on the Tree Survey
Plan)
- Tree position (We operate to an accuracy of within one metre but can be more precise if
required)
- Species, common and Latin name
- Stem diameter, measured in millimetres at 1.5 metres above ground
level
- Branch spread in metres on the North, South, East and West
axis
- Age class (young, middle aged, mature, over mature or
veteran)
- Trees physiological condition (good, fair. poor or
dead)
- Trees structural condition (e.g the presence of decay and
cavities and any other physical defects)
- Preliminary management recommendations including further
investigation of suspected defects that require more detailed assessment and the potential for
wildlife
- Estimated remaining contribution in years (e.g less than 10.
10-20. 20-40 and 40+)
- Tree category grading as defined in table 1 of BS 5837 (Good,
Moderate, Poor or Dead)
- Wildlife considerations and habitat potential
- Any other relevant matters
We will use a properly referenced Ordnance Survey topographical survey (usually prepared by others) as
the base for our drawing and plotting activities. If needs be we can produce our own base drawing but if a
topographical survey already exists then it is more cost effective to use that.
We will plot accurately onto the drawing the positions of the trees, their crown spreads and other
relevant site features using software called ArborCad which is produced by Chris Skellern. We have relied on this
software for many years. For more information click
here.
The data collected relating to tree height, diameter and crown spread is processed and cross referenced
to a spread sheet from where it can be exported into the body of the Tree Survey Report with no further requirement
for retyping or editing. In this way accuracy is assured.
